In Flight

Looking to improve my photography, just started in January, so may as well learn something from being critiqued...

Thanks much!

edit: Lost the original in my edit... took advice of Nikonjan and straightened horizon and a better crop... sorry about that. As I mention, I'm a rookie...

When I click on the photo it doesn't enlarge for me to see more detail. Good catch with a bird in flight. Would be nice to see more of a reflection of the bird on the water.Always remember to straighten your horizons.Crop out and get rid of anything in the photo that draws your eye away. I see some light spot way to the left. Crop to the rule of thirds. Hope this helps.

Sorry about the size, was trying to attach this from a mobile phone and copy/pasted the wrong link.

Attached a larger version now.

Much appreciate the comments, all of them I've read about a dozen times, and didn't apply them... exactly what I hope to gain. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Couple quick edits, and I definitely agree it's already a much better photo!

NP.

I think this would be better if you got the bird and its reflection rather than all the stuff in the background. It seems almost like you accidentally got the bird in the shot rather than you were trying to shoot the bird itself.

Nice picture in its own way, nice and sharp and such. It's cool you got the bird in flight like that, not an easy thing to do.

I was sitting in a paddle boat and saw the bird coming from a distance... I didn't have much time to prep the shot, but the bird was my primary subject, and looking back I absolutely wish I would have got more of its reflection!

Thanks for your comments!

NP yeh sometimes life is like that. I always look at pictures I took/take and think "I wish I did this or that" I guess that's how you learn.

The blue heron is a favorite subject of mine. I have hundreds of shots much worse than this one. Yes the reflection adds a lot to the overall image. They do come in kind of fast so a focus then click before it moves out of focus makes it hard to frame and compose on the fly like that. Next time it will be better.
