When photographing an American Coot, ask Charles to say "Cheese". :nunu: Sorry buddy, couldn't resist.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

You guys are too funny. I know when you are doing falls or ripples to slow shutter speed for softening, but you can't for a pond. Should I just had focused on the coot and not let the water be in focus as much?

Coots know they are the perfect size for eating. I think this is why they are somewhat elusive.

Get a boat. Some of the best coots are to be found walking on the vegetation found off shore like lily pads. A long lens and a slow approach is best. If you must shoot from shore have a partner circle around them and walk towards you to drive them closer to your lens. Be patient and quiet as their attention is distracted from you they will get quite close before you are noticed. If you want you can try a coot Ghillie suit. Simply wear plaid shorts up around your chest level with a pastel shirt tucked in. Sandals with black socks will complete the ensemble. Golfing hat is optional. Good luck.

Depending on the situation you might have a reflection in the frame which makes a bonus to the composition. Otherwise just focus on the eyes like everything else.

 Gotcha. I only have orange plaid, but could wear a hot pink tank top with it if you think it might help.

I was going to mention keeping an eye out for Coots in boats and shore partners but was afraid I'd end up on a hit list... so I'll just keep quiet..
