Does anyone have an idea of what this might be. ive looked in books on fungus, toadstools and ive taken it to some of the park rangers around here and they dont know either. This was taken off of the long point trail in west virginia and it was 24 in wide 8 in tall.

It certainly looks like chicken-of-the-woods. It isn't? How fleshy is it?

It looks like a chantrelle Mushroom that has been blown out or over grown, Chantrelles are found in great numbers here in the pacific northwest coast range. I bought some camera gear by picking them and selling them to mushroom buyers about three years ago. they usually start appearing here after the first rains of the fall. Premium mushrooms can bring up to $2.00 per pound from a mushroom buyer here.

The color is the same but if this is a Chantrelle, it is way over grown.

It is what it is.

(No way it's a chanterelle, Barry. I know them well, only wish I could find them more easily in this neck of the woods). Did you notice if it was growing out of a piece of wood or bark in the ground? I would guess it's some sort of tree fungus from what you say of its woody feel, and the color would also be right.Have you found any Boletes?(no gills under cap, just spongy pore surface. Some are womnderful eating.
