This was my very first attempt at getting a shot at the stars! I LOVE the night sky!

Ahh... It's not loading my pic!

Where's the light on that tree coming from?

There were some street lights on on the road, so I guess it's coming from there. The tree was not lit!! There actually wasn't any light on it.

I see.

Well, honestly I've never tried star photography because HK doesn't really have stars.

But from what I've seen of star photography (the good stuff). They'll do quite long exposures AND have a scene set for the shot. Say a barn or something. Also I think it would be better to use a wider lens and move out of the suburbs... Also perhaps a new moon + cloudless night would be better.

Just some thoughts.

I found this site while searching for examples of good star photography:
photographystepbystep.com/night-photogra...ipment-and-exposure/

Their example:
is excellent and a fine example of what i mean by having a scene.

Its a good first attempt, I agree with Stealthy on the scene setting, worth researching. :judge: :judge: :judge:

I agree, a shot as rich in stars as the example posted by SN is impossible to do without a very, very clear sky. For an in-town shot, your effort is really quite good. The wispy clouds are an attractive substitute for zillions of stars. The one (and only) nit I would pick is that the tree is leaning. Straight up would be better.

The Orion Constellation is an easy one to recognize. If you zoom in more you'll start to pick up the earth's rotation in your longer shots unless you use a clockwork mount.

Good first try. I've shot some meteor showers but was in a place with almost no light pollution. My shots were about 20 seconds at f/1.8 and ISO400. Even at that, a bright moon will hide many stars. Keep working on it. It's worth it.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
