I'll start by saying this is a beautiful low key portrait of this lion.  You have his attention and I like that he is looking right at you.  The light is nicely focused which brings nice contrast to the photo.  If I can suggest, one thing.  For me, I would like to see just a little more exposure around the lions head.  If you have Lightroom you can bump up exposure and perhaps just a smidge of clarity gained, and while at it, run the sharping filter to pull out more detail of the animals fur.

However those are just my thoughts, it's a great shot.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 17-40mmL, 24-105mmL, 100-400mmL, 300mm f/4L IS, Sigma 12-24mm, 430EX, Extension tubes

Yeah! Nice wildlife shot! I agree that this needs to improve the exposure.

It´s a lovely portrait of this fellow, i´m trying to work out where the light source is coming from as flash is not showing on the exif, is it from jeep headlights on safari?
If you click on the image twice you´ll see the full size resolution, it then becomes apparent the detail could be better - two things you have against you here is the high ISO of 6400 @ F:5 and the actual build quality of the 55-250 lens which is more of a kit lens and not as sharp. Using faster and sharper glass at 2.8 would have dropped your ISO into the region of a more manageable 2000 and given lots more definition / clarity.
I like the way he´s laying down, looks relaxed and probably used to being photographed many times, where was the location for the image?
As others have mentioned may be apply a little more exposure around the top of his head and shoulder area - well done :-)

Yep, that's right, the light is coming from the jeep as it was very late at night. These animals are in the wild not a zoo, in fact we where at the Kruger in south africa. This picture was only slightly edited with snapseed but I guess I need to take it a level further to lightroom (will take all these tips)! A few minutes after this picture the lion woke up and passed just under where I was sitting! Was a really nice experience!

Understandably your favorite. I like it quite well as is. I suspect many safari goers would love to get such a shot.
