AF-C 3D tracking

5 years 6 months ago #611335 by tgkelly
I'm trying to workout the best auto focus modes for birds, mainly feeding in my backyard. I was using 9-21 dynamic  with my D750 but not the best hit rate. I have tried the 3D tracking and it seems a little better. I'm using 70-200 F4. With 3D tracking I am getting maybe 3 in a burst of 5-8 shots with the focus point on the eye or head.
The question being is this about what I can expect from this camera/lens combo or is there some change needed in my settings. I have attached a couple of shots for you to look at. Note the birds are feeding so they are always moving their head to feed and look out.

In my wildlife work, I use only one point (that I will place in the frame for composition), CH fire, BBF, mainly at ƒ8, Auto ISO.

My keepers rate is not technically based but by the best take in a séquence.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You need to find what's comfy, and never expect a high hit rate with BIF.

Why so serious?

9 dynamic possibly for the D750, but auto-focus vastly improved for BIF on the D810 / D500 & D850 with the group area focus which i use along with single point..

Thanks all.
I might just have to lower my expectations but I'll keep trying. It's just annoying when the shot you want with the best position and attitude is the 1 that the focus didn't nail. I suppose that's photography.
