G'day all

One from a recent visit to a local wildlife park ... this cheetah was up wide awake, eyes sweeping the area

G'day Stephen

It was a delicate task to "vote with my feet" and move to and fro to find a camera position that did not show too much of the wire fences and "zoo detritus" that obviously exists in such places.  Then it was choosing a wide aperture to minimise DoF and accentuate the animal's face

Equally cute to the snow leopard .

Phil, Do you normally set ISO manually or let the camera choose ?
Could you have afforded a higher ISO  to  give  yourself more leeway for shutter speed,  to lessen [ effects of ] camera shake at 20 x zoom ?

G'day David

After 40+ years with film camera SLRs and setting things manually, these days I prefer to allow the camera to do most of the work while I "just tinker". I am a bit different from many here in that I shoot 100% JPG and do very limited -if any- PP after the event. I am well aware of DoF and shutter speeds per zoom-in-use issues, and unless I am after max DoF, I'm happy with the sharpness I get using Apertures in the F4 to F6,3 range. Also with Shutter speeds -and using the monopod- I know that I can shoot down to 1/25s without too many handicaps ~ but I also will use up to 1/2000s on "S" mode when needed too

My std settings for the camera ... for 90% of my shooting are
a) "P" Program mode......... with intelligent use of the exposure-settings modification dial + the histogram and the EV +/- button
b) ISO-800 max on Auto-ISO (allowing the camera to wander from 80 to 800 as needed)
=and=
c) a heavy duty monopod for most shooting

ps- there was a discussion involving monopods some time ago where I offered a PDF showing my DIY monopod. If it interests you have a sqwiz at " www.photographytalk.com/forum/lenses/290...ilisation-vs-monopod "

Hope this helps

Some nice ones here Phil.  That first shot got my attention because of the cat's attention.... nice angle too.  It doesn't look "zoo". :cheer:
