G'day all

This sand monitor was quite happy resting quietly with a large rock behind.  He / it was about 1,5 to 1,8m from head to tail

Just a gorgeous photo! I was peeking at the specs and saw you used a long reach lens. That's my next purchase I'm saving for. Even then, you live in a wild place on Earth.

G'day mate
Although I had SLRs plus a bevy of lenses over 40-or so yrs of film photography, these days I have abandoned SLRs and gone for fixed-lens superzoom / bridge cameras.  Thus every time I go out I have 20x zoom (the FZ-2500) or 24x zoom (the smaller FZ-300) at my disposal ... dSLR equiv = 18 > 360 or 430mm or full frame equiv = 24 > 480 or 600 depending on the camera.  Each has Leica lens attached and I am more than happy with the sharpness I achieve

If you are fixed on your use of dSLR bodies, then I suggest a serious look into the Tamron 18-400 .... it is getting large numbers of followers across the globe

I have and use my Nikon DSLR but my investments in new glass are going to the mirror less Sony A7iv at this point. There's a Sony 400-600mm lens I have my eye on. Seems Tamron doesn't make a 600mm yet for the Sony, just the 500mm. It testing I have seen, that last 100 makes a difference, and the image quality is not as impressive on my Nikon compared to the Sony, especially at higher ISO or low light. In full light, direct sun, it is amazing though.
