I love the portrait on the first one. A tip I have picked up that seems to work is to focus on the eyes. Even after the fact you might try sharpening just the eyes and dodge in the catchlights. A sharp looking eye gives the whole image the impression it is tack sharp.

The pictures you posted, you have the right concept, just need to watch out for some things. The puppy, the whole image looks blurry, maybe due to low lighting. I like your flower picture.
