Screen: which one to use?

7 years 7 months ago #497386 by nicolasnico
Hello,

I have a DELL laptop (Latitude E6530). Not the best for photography maybe. I've ordered a screen calibration tool (Spyder 5 pro) but beside this, I'm looking into options to get a better screen. I see different options, but I'm not sure which ones are realistic. Any advice?
1) Buy a good quality screen (which one?) and connect it to my laptop, will it change something? Is that even possible?
2) Buying a whole new computer to work on my pictures?
Thank you!

Hey Nick,

I've had really good luck with Dell's professional line, the Ultrasharps are OK but I like the color better on the pro's. Plus since these are used on ton's of business machines, you can pick them up second hand for super cheap, which would work since you got a calibration tool. Pretty much any monitor will work for you since your laptop has VGA & HDMI, although I would opt for HDMI.

As for a dedicated editing PC, depends on your budget.

Thank you for making PhotographyTalk.com your photography community of choice.

As cybersholt wrote: Connecting your laptop do a separate / external screen would work. I know a few people who use a TV as screen.......

If money isn't that a big subject I'd definitely opt for a separate, dedicated PC for photo - work; adjusted etc. specifically for that purpose.

I use a separate monitor for everything photo related, a Dell Ultrasharp. I'm very satisfied with it - the majority of the work I produce is black and white, however, so I can't comment too much on the color critique that cybersholt mentioned. I think it makes a huge difference if you're serious about working with your images - being able to see your work up close on a high quality monitor allows you to get more in depth and precise with your edits. Would definitely reccomend making the investment for any professional.
