Greetings from North Carolina

After retiring recently, I have been spending the majority of my time learning more about photography and practicing what I learn.

I got my start several years ago with a Nikon D60 and its kit lenses. Friends at a local dance studio asked me to take pictures for them during dress rehearsals before big performances. This freed them up so they could watch their children. Of course I could not use a flash, so I quickly learned about low-light auditorium photography and the limitations of the kit lenses!

The best investment ever was my first prime lens in 2010, the Nikkor 85/f 1.8. All of a sudden I could take shots, stop the motion, and the pictures really snapped! All the parents loved this result! I shared pictures with the entire studio via Facebook, and the enjoyment I got from the 'likes' was exhilirating.

Well, I bet most folks on this site know what happened next. Yes, I had to get new lenses (notably Nikkor 70-200/ f2.8), new camera(s), first a Nikon D7100, then the best camera ever (well, I know, maybe not the best, but OMG) a Nikon D500.

Now, several thousands of dollars later, I actually have some paid shoots. I believe I could get lots more because of the goodwill I've earned by shooting and sharing pictures for free all these years.

That's my story, which I bet is similar to lots of others here.

Now, if you have been patient enough to read this far, can you tell me how to change the cover photo for this site (right now the default is a sliced orange). I am usually good at this kind of thing, but so far I've had no luck figuring this out!

Thanks, and I'm glad to be here!
