I am seriously thinking of purchasing a nicer wildlife lens. Other than the two grand difference in price. Is the 400mm that better than the 300 2.8. Will do some bird photos but mostly photographing mammals Whitetails, elk and this will be going to alaska with me August 2011

Any one have experience with either or both and give me some valuable insite

Thanks in advance

I have no experience of iether lens so can only say make your decision based on how close do you think you can get to your subjects, if it isnt very close then its the 400mm, if you can get very close thenthe 300mm will do

If you can afford the 400mm f2.8 I would go with that one!

Irregardless of which one you get, I hope you have a very stable tripod for either of these puppies as you will need it...(My 500th post ! :woohoo: )

If you're going wildlife, i'd go 500 f/4 over those 2.

:agree: the 400mm f/2.8 and 500mm f/4 are both floating around the $8,000 area and the 300mm f/2.8 is around the $5700 area. If you have the cash to spend on a lens of this scale, I would go with the 500mm f/4 also.

What about the 70-200 VRII f2.8 with a 1.4 teleconverter? You would only lose a stop with the teleconverter if you decided to use it.
