Buying second body. Need advice on Nikon D800 vs D3x vs D4

11 years 5 months ago #261075 by Danny Carson
I'm getting mixed signals from all my friends on which to pick up. I want something that will be good in low light. I've been reading so many good reviews on the D800 and considering how much less it is from the D4 and the older D3x, it's a good contender. I'm currently shooting with a D300 and will be keeping this camera.

I really appreciate the help here.

I'd go with the D800 myself. Unless you're shooting a lot of action. The D3s is still a lot of camera as well. If you have DX lenses, I believe they'll be 18 MP or so on the D800, still not too bad. With any bodies you mention, some new glass would also be in order.... ;)

Now would you pony up a few extra for the D800E?

I wouldn't now, but I would study it a little more if I were ready to buy. I've seen some landscapes and macros from the "E", and honestly, some are stunning.....

What are you shooting? it seems like you don't know what you want since all the cameras you've listed are geared towards different tasks.

D4 is nikon's best low light offering. The 1DX is better I believe from canon in that aspect.

D3x is terrible in low light. It's a studio cam.

I'm looking to get a D800 soon myself, does the E really make that much difference? I'll need to revisit that. Now can a normal D800 get upgraded to an "E" version?

The high pass filter could certainly be removed.....

I owned the d800 and the d800e.

Buy the E.

You'll never get moire unless you tailor make a situation to get it. The resolution is way too high for moire to be a factor. The D800e is noticeably sharper from f/4 to f/8 where neither a shallow DOF nor diffraction are doing the work of an OLPF. Might as well have the best if you're going to juggle 36MP files anyway.

LOL yeh completely different things. It's actually a Optical LOW pass filter anyway (AKA Anti Aliasing filter). It softens the image slightly so you don't get AA and Moire.

High pass filter is completely different. It CAN be used to sharpen if or soften if you invert it. But it's not the same at all.
