Any Nikon kit lenses worth having in the camera bag?

You see people always so sour about kit lenses.  What I want to know are there any good ones worth having?

Kit lenses are only for those that can't afford better glass. That being said, some of the finest landscape photos I've ever seen were posted by a Russian photographer shooting a D40 and an 18-135 kit lens.
There is an adage in regard to this......

Why so serious?

I'm going to throw a different spin on this. A "Kit" lens is any lens sold with the camera as part of a bundle. Thus  a "Pro" caliber lens could theoretically be called a "Kit" lens.  You really are asking a vague question. You need to be more specific as to what lenses you are questioning...

I have and use the 18-55. I had the 18-135, well I still do, but its aperture blades are shall we say not it the correct place after the lens got slightly slammed. I see kits as kind of like disposable glass, like buying the Ugly rated glass at KEH. Though I did like that 18-135 quite a bit. I should try fixing those blades, and educate myself on how an AF-S lens is put together. Most kits are good within a narrow f-stop range. I just leave them at f/6 to f/10.

Another different spin.   What can you afford.  As was noted earlier, you can take a great picture with a kit lens.  However, better glass gives you a better chance at capturing a great image in a diverse set of circumstances.  But if you can't afford better glass, you can still do OK with a kit lens.  Plus they are smaller/easier to carry.   That said, I would never buy a kit lens if it meant I couldn't afford a better lens.   I also wouldn't buy expensive glass if I am new to the hobby and am not sure if I will stick with it (and had a limited budget)
