Nikon 300mm f/2.8 vs Nikon 300mm f/4.0

I want a 300mm bad, I mean really BAD.  However I don't have a spare $6,000 grand sitting in my bank account for the 2.8 of this lens.  Any of you have the f/4 version?  Can you post how you feel about the lens.  Does it meet your expectations?

I have the manual focus Nikkor 300mm F4.5 ED IF version of this lens & it is excellent. Smaller & more lightweight than any other version.  Would have liked an AF version, but budget constraints, coupled with limited use of this focal length drove me to the MF version that I have.

I own an AF-S 300 f/4 and its possibly my best glass for the money. The f/2.8 is of course faster, but MUCH heavier as well. I slap on a TC 1.7 and get pretty good results with proper light. I think I could be wearing mine out....
Edit: If I had the cash for the 2.8, I'd wait and just buy a 600 f/4 and be done with it....

Why so serious?

I'm a Canon guy and I would love to have a 300mm in my bag.  Have you guys considered manual older glass for big stuff like this?

Are those manual lenses?  I've been looking at some older manual glass on eBay.  Any issues to beware of with older glass?

Well, mold would be the first thing. Then the condition of the elements.

Just the usual to make sure the seller has good feedback. Yes, fungus is one concern but can't usually be discerned thru eBay images unless the seller discloses it. You can tell  a lot from a serial # if it is shown in the pictures by going thru this link... With your camera, you will be able to meter only in Manual & Aperture priority modes

The new F/4 has shown great results.  It's a good solution for you.

Yes the reviews seem positive. Personally, I think I'd miss the mounting foot on the new model.....:(

Just a heads up, I picked up a used copy of the 300 F4 AF version, the one prior to the VR version. Nice lens, but I think the MF version might be sharper...
