Camera Cleaning Tips for a Newbie?

7 years 11 months ago #479045 by SuzyM
Hey guys!

I'm pretty new to photography and have never cleaned my camera or lens. I have a Nikon D3300 with a 18-55mm lens. I've read about a few tools I can use (like blowers, brushes, etc) but was wondering if anyone felt like one cleaning tool or method is better than others? Or would it be best if I take it in and let a pro handle the cleaning?

Thanks!

If it's your sensor or mirror that needs cleaning, try this:  www.nikon-tutorials.com/2014/01/how-to-c...r-sensor-and-mirror/

If it's your lens that needs some attention, give this a shot:  support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/...n-the-camera-lens%3F

I figured a guide straight from Nikon would be more appreciated than me rambling. - Marty

First I will say do not obsess over cleaning the inside of your camera, or lenses. I think far too many people do. For the most part you will not see the dust in any of your images, this is especially true for the lens end of it. And dust/dirt on the sensor really only shows up when you shoot above say f/13 , or greater. So again do not worry about it a whole lot.

So first get a rocket blower. You can get some disposable wipes, and cleaner for your lenses, or as I do my t-shirt, and rarely a drop of plain water on the lens.

For the sensor it is always blow first, and wet clean second. Since you should already have the blower, you try blowing it out first, and then take a test shot, and see if it worked. If it did not, then I like the Gel Stick, it is nice, and easy. photographylife.com/product/sensor-gel-stick

Just go out and shoot. As I said initially don't worry about it too much, just go out and have fun.
