Nikon 58mm f/1.4 lens vs 50mm f/1.4

Can someone tell me why this 58mm f/1.4 is 3x the cost of a 50mm f/1.4? There must be something more to this story than 8mm difference costing an extra $1,000?

Why so serious?

The 58 produces better bokeh, has improved colors and contrast, and is built better. But its more of a speciality lens, thus the specialty price. The 50 is for more all-purpose usage and Nikon sells many, many more of them, thus the lower price point.

It has the same characteristics as the 200 f/2 for shooting portraits.  At 1/3rd the price.

Thanks gang, clear, however just not personally sold on spending that kind of $$ for this lens.

Do you do portraits or candids ever?

I bet this would be a 'top 3' lenses to have if you shoot portraits.

I have, and use, the 58mm f/1.2 this is meant to replace. If it comes even close to the performance of that lens, it is well worth the price. Here's an example of the 58mm f/1.2:

I bet that lens just performs so well in low light conditions.     That piano shot has such a sharp reflection!

Yes. That lens, known as the Noct, was created exactly for shooting live theater events.

The Noct is a legendary lens.  This new one is great...I don't know how they compare but the money is worth it for both lenses if you can afford it.
