The best nikon lens for landscapes?

Is it the 24mm f/1.4?

There is  no "best" lens for  any type of photography. What one person thinks is a treasure, another will not. Any number of focal lengths or zooms  can be employed. It's best to shoot & see what works for you. With landscape photograhy, a fast lens isn't normally needed unless shooting after dark as light levels are not as important since most likely you will be shooting on a tripod.. Sensor size needs to be taken into consideration of course..

That 24 f/1.4 is a very nice astrophotography lens, but as Scott said there is no "best".
I have a 16-35 f/4, its not real fast but its my favorite landscape lens....

The 24 is a fantastic lens but you probably don't need that speed (1.4). I love using my 17-35 zoom, in a way one of Nikon's 'forgotten' treasures. Almost as versatile as the iconic 14-24, but allows me to use my Lee filters without a special attachment.

It as said depends on what you are shooting, and the effect you want. If you use solely wides, and have something in the distance you want in as well you are screwed, because the foreground will look good, and the distant objects will be tiny. You then need a longer focal length to get focal compression to bring the background object closer. So yeah a 70-200 is great for that. Subject as always what determines what is best at any time.

Well I sometimes hold my breathe while I focus when it is cold out, because the viewfinder fogs up. Then I let out some of my breath, and snap the shutter when hand holding. On a tripod I do not worry about it.

Totally depends on the effect you want as Joves mentioned. Here's a short little video that I think does a great job at illustrating the differences and uses of a longer lens on landscapes.
