Why does Nikon use Sony sensors vs it's own?

Just wondering why some of the Nikon cameras aren't using Nikon sensors.  Instead many of them are using Sony sensors.  Just wondering the reasoning behind this?

That doesn't make sense, Nikon is already making their own sensors.  BTW, Canon's 50MP sensor, who is making that?  If Canon, and Nikon's largest sensor that Nikon makes is their 24MP, that is a large gap!

But only for a couple of cameras. Nikon is smart in not making all of their own, because it is not putting all of its eggs in one basket. Lets just say that Nikon cutoff all of its purchasing from other companies, and then later their plant got screwed up by some unseen event. Well then they are at the mercy of whoever they have to go to price wise, and supply wise too. This way they can make some of their own, and use other makers sensors with a specific price, and at a set amount of units. They not only use Sony, but have used Toshiba as well for a couple of their Dslrs. So yeah Nikon is smart when it comes to this. They can define what they want in a sensor, and not have to do all of the developing of it.

There aren't many manufacturing firms that don't outsource most of their components.....

The ones that don't outsource are the ones that make them or else buy out the company that does.
