Nikon 28-300mm vs 70-200mm

Hey gang.  I was just reading another persons post here about traveling to China and which lens to bring.  The subject of the 28-300mm came up and was recommended.

I was not aware of this lens.  I currently have a 70-200mm.  Which is a good lens, however when I go out I usually at least have this lens and my 24-70mm with me.  I'm curious to those that have or have used this 28-300mm, what do you think of the lens?

Be advised that it is a variable aperture lens as opposed to fixed. Also, the zoom range is larger, meaning there are more shortcuts (for lack of a better word) taken in it's design. It can't be at it's best throughout it's range as zooms are designed to be at their optical peak at certain focal lengths & apertures. Same applies to your 70-200, but it is less of a range & thus not as impacted. That said, it does run from wide angle to telephoto & as such limits the need to switch out lenses. Most people I know that have it,  like the 28-300. Personally, I don't like super zooms with this much range and being variable aperture.

What Scott says is accurate.

I have the AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G and I like it.  It has become my everyday walk-around lens.  It's not suitable for when you need or want a larger aperture though.  Other drawbacks are: it's big and heavy, but you can get used to that; and it has significant barrel or pin cushion distortion throughout its range, but since that's a one-click fix in Lightroom, that's not a big deal.

Yup, check the weights of the two lenses, that may be the deal maker/breaker on what you want to carry....
Another consideration, if you're taking the D200, it will NOT handle much ISO push. My D800 takes surprisingly good shots at 6400, the lens' speed would be a near non factor on that....

The 28-300 is 200g lighter than the 24-70 and 740g lighter than 70-200 so weight isn't an issue compared either. It is longer when extended (zoomed to 300) but shorter when retracted. It takes a 77mm filter same as the 70-200 and less than 24-70 so it's in no way a bulkier lens. That being said are technically better for the reasons already stated. I've decided it's a compromise lens, not the best results you can get but acceptable (at least for me) for when I can't or choose not to carry multiple lenses. Used within it's limitations you get very good results in good light and with higher ISO good results in lower light. I haven't tried it for night work.
