Nikon 200-500mm vs the Sigma 150-600mm

6 years 10 months ago #530201 by Eliffman
Morning PT.  I currently shooting with a D700 and need a lens with some distance to it.  Sharp images and as quick as possible.

I'm on the fence between Nikon's 200-500mm and then Sigma has the 150-600mm. From a focal standpoint the Sigma seems to offer more, but we all know, more isn't always best.

Can I get your thoughts on which of these 2 lenses would you go with?  I'll be photographing birds with this lens.

Thanks in advance.

That Sigma (and the Tamron version) get pretty good reviews. Go to the sell sites and read the feedback, you'll get more info than here.....
Also, I'd probably get the Sigma, that extra 100mm matters....

Why so serious?

I'd go with the Sigma

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 17-40mmL, 24-105mmL, 100-400mmL, 300mm f/4L IS, Sigma 12-24mm, 430EX, Extension tubes

I have the Canon 100-400 L and the Sigma 150-600 and can not tell the difference in quality. I use the Canon when I need a slightly lighter and smaller lens.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

That Sigma is going to give you a better focal range, better price and over all options.

I have the Nikkor 80-400. That's long enough for my needs...

Have you tried using a 2x converter on this lens?

No, I don't like converters much even though I have them. At most I'd use a 1.4x if I did...

I use a 1.7 TC on my 300 f/4 in good light. Pretty good but I've tried a 2.0 and its clearly a degraded image, I don't care what Nikon says...Also, I don't even like a 1.4 on a zoom....
