Whats a good Nikon film camera?

I want to get a film camera.  What's a good option for something under $300.

I'm looking at the Nikon FM and FE series.  They are running between $80 and $200-ish.  They are from the 70's.  I'm sold on them because they are built like tanks and inexpensive.  The newest version I believe is the FM3A, and reportedly has taken all of the great stuff from the FM and FE cameras, and all the cameras Nikon built since then, to produce one of the best film cameras ever made.  But I think it's a bit out of your price range, starting at around $350 I think and going up to around $750.

But if you need autofocus those aren't going to work for you.

You can probably find an F4s for that, Check KEH. A fabulous camera, built like a tank, and with most of the bells and whistles of the day. An F5 might be more/ I have an F4s, and I occasionally still use it.

I agree with John, but don't overlook a F100....You can still have them new, or get a lightly used model. It has all you would want and priced well under your budget....
You can't have mine.

I think that effron and John are giving solid recommendations. I think the place to start is by asking you what your current lens line-up is....for example, if you just want to experiment a bit with film and you have the AF-D series lenses a fine performer and very underrated body is the N8008s that can be had in great working order for around 30 bucks or so. If you have all G lenses, there is nothing wrong with the little N75 body for a quick film fix and you can find those for around 40 bucks give or take. If you have manual focus lenses the F3HP is a solid workhorse.
Altogether though, I think the F4s is a great all purpose film body because of the wide range of lens compatibility.

It is what it is.

Those of you shooting film, do you have a hard time finding film or getting it developed?

Film is not hard to find in my area, and there is always adorama.com. a good lab is a treasure to find lately, that is why I process my own film.

You really need to specify AF or a MF model. Some of the older MF models are pretty much all mechanical & only need a battery for the meter, if even that.

Oh, another point, do you have lenses for it already? Most older film cameras are crippled if trying to shoot with a gelded lens (that's one with no aperture ring) as they can't set the aperture thru the camera (all older MF models can't use "G" lenses an only a few AF models can)

That's why I recommended an F-100, most anything old snaps on and will use all new "G" lenses and everything in between. The older pre AI might be an exception.

Now we just need the OP to specify whether or not they want an AF or a MF camera...
