Nikon 24mm vs Nikon 20mm for half of the price?

So the 20mm is a f/1.8 and sells for around $800 bucks while the 24mm is quicker of a lens at f/1.4 and is selling at $1800 ( w/ refurbs selling around $1400).

So can the 20mm with it's smaller aperture come close to the 24mm in a side by side test?

What does that mean?

There is 1/3 of a stop between f/1.8 and f/1.4. That only matters in low light situations. What are you going to do with the lens? Shoot wide angle shots? Or do you need a larger field of view on a crop sensor? If so, the 20mm is probably your better choice.

Also: if you're doing landscapes/cityscapes/etc. you're probably not going to be shooting wide open. That extra 1/3 stop becomes irrelevant for many tasks.

I picked up a 17-36 f/2.8 and it's working out fine for what I want: ultra-wide angle shots with geometric distortion. I don't need faster glass for that.

I have that 20 f/1.8 and love it. Its my night photography and low light go to lens, on my D800 that half stop means nothing.....

The question can only be answered by you. Others may not have the same needs & desires as you. I'd suggest shooting rented lenses at those focal lengths and decide for yourself rather than have someone else decide for you...
