New Lenses for my New 850D

6 years 1 week ago #577781 by Goldhammer
Hello,
I am just back from vacation in Africa and as my friend had a very nice Cam, I was totally hooked on to replace my old Canon to something new and good.

So I read a lot and I decided for the Nikon 850D, for sure this thing is way better then what I need, but I want to learn now and my old Canon I had for 15 years now.

So I have the 850D now and I have now clue about lenses in the Nikon world, so I would need some advise. I wanted to have a basic set of 3-4 lenses covering my main areas, portraits, Kids and Landscapes... no need for Makro, night or other extreme things. Also my budget for the moment is gone with the cam, so now only basits to use the cam.

So read a bit and I pre-ordered the following lenses to start with:
Nikon Nikkor AF-S Objective 85mm f/1.8 for Portaraits
Nikon AF-P DX 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6 for landscapes

Pleas let me know if those make sense for the 850, or not.

Thanks
Philipp

It's a "D850" in Nikon-land :-)

Your choice of the 85 f/1.8 is a fine choice for portraits, and fast for kids and indoors. The downside is that the minimum focus distance is 3 feet, so don't get too close.

Send the DX lens back and get a 35mm f/1.8. Not really wide enough, but wider than that DX lens. At some point you'll want the 24mm, or maybe 20mm.

You can read about Tokina lenses, some of which are decent. Tamron and Sigma both have good products in their line ups.

And look for used lenses. You don't have to have new. Do some research online for opinions about various lenses. The people usually get it right when the sample size is large enough.

For every lens in the Canon catalog, there will be a Nikon equivalent. Figure out what focal length and speed you need/want, then go googling for information. Or ask here about specific lenses.

Yup, beat me to it.
Avoid DX lenses....almost any full frame lens will be fine, the more expensive are usually better.

Sorry... I was Canon Kid till now :-)

Thanks... I will return the DX and now I was looking into the  Tamron: SP24-70mm F2.8 Di VC USD G2 für Nikon (A032N) .... to have one for everyday.... what do you think?

It gets fair reviews. Supposedly good at mid apertures but soft at focal extremes. I know of one guy that has it and he claims its as good as any in his bag....

I have the older 28-75, and it's a good as any lens I have for focus speed and sharpness throughout. The movement is stiff, but I don't mind. Got it used for $400.

The trick with Tamron is manufacturing consistency, especially with the older lenses.

Even the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 at its cost will need to be scrutinized if bought used. You'll need to test any you buy asap....Maybe a 24-85 f/4 Nikon?

I know the first will make you very happy but I got no
idea as the second goes, it is just not a lens I would use.

The D850 comes with a great set of features at all levels and
they will come to full value when used with pro Nikkor lenses.

Yup, it makes no sense to buy a top body like the D850, then hamper it by not using the finest glass made....Nikon pro glass.
