Best Nikon camera for landscapes?

Both my cameras are on their last leg and need to replaced.  My D70 I want to say I've had for over 10 years and my D300 is about 9.  Actually I think I may have had both longer. 

Regardless, I need a new camera and I want to get something that is considered the best now, if you haven't noticed, I tend to keep and use things for a long time.  

I'm open to full frame or crop.  I would like to know if you were going to buy a new Nikon camera for shooting landscapes.  

Which would it be?

Any camera can record landscapes.  Since some walking is usually necessary to do landscape images I would recommend whatever is smallest, lightest and easiest to carry.  Which model is truly trivial.  Buy whatever appeals to you.  Don't worry about what appeals to others.

As noted, any camera can record landscapes. Any lens can shoot landscapes as well. Many people will get a super wide angle for scenics, but there is a way to use them and most people don't use them properly. Images of sweeping vistas are not good if the subjects are small in the frame. You really need to have foreground subject matter when using a SWA lens. Better to use something not as wide & take a panoramic shot, stitching images together. As for what format to get, well, that's up to you and what you expect to be shooting. Lenses made for the DX format tend to be slower and variable aperture as opposed to full frame lenses although that is changing. I have both formats and use the cameras for different subject matter, which format depends on what I intend to shoot. One point to consider is to stay away from base model DX-format cameras as they all require focus motors in the lens in order to have autofocus. FX & upper-end DX models will have a focus motor built into the camera & many will also meter with older manual  focus lenses (a good investment is there are budget concerns). I used to shoot with a D70s, went to a D300 (which I still have) and now use a D7100 and a D610 (plus an Olympus OMD EM-10)

Go as high res as you can, and the camera that has the most dynamic range.   You want to be able to push shadows to extend range.   My most used landscape  lens is actually a 70-200mm to echo what is said above.

What isn't mentioned is filters.  GND's and Polarizers are paramount and a good tripod.  Don't be afraid to go all out on a tripod, it's worth it's weight in gold.

and the last glass of champagne has been drunk
All that you are left with are the memories and the images-David Cooke.

+1 on the lens. I use the 70-200 f/2.8 when I don't have to fly, and 70-300 variable aperture when I travel. I find that the WA's are most useful in shooting urban landscapes, while the tele-zooms are more useful in shooting seascapes and wide open spaces.I think a 24-70mm and a either70-200mm or 70-300mm on an FX body would be an adequate place to start.

I as well used both of those, now shoot a D7100 and D800. Lost of good notes above, and I agree with Scotty, go as hi res as you can.....

I don't think there is a best for / in anything.

It all has to do with the end use, the user and the skills!
Light is free… capturing it is not!
