WTH - Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 ED VR is 82mm vs 77mm?

5 years 5 months ago #616642 by Tony Imaging
I just bought the new 24-70mm f/2.8 ED VR and seem to over look this is 82mm vs 77mm that the original Nikon 24-70mm was.

Why in the world did Nikon jump up to 82mm?

All my filters are 77mm!

Something has changed in the construction of that lens that
wants to maintain a constant ƒ2.8 through the whole zoom.

What filters?

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Some requirement for image quality, light, internal parts.

With all due respect, that's a $2400 lens. Do you not have the budget for a new CPL?

But it was a f/2.8 before.

But then, the VR was added to this one, so that could be the change.   I wonder what the VR mechanics looks like?

Still the VR takes up a bit of space.

I'm not certain the VR added made the difference, but sure could be the reason. Time for square and rectangle filters and holder anyway, a Lee or Nisi system, or the like.

Killer lens, you can go with square Hitech filters and not have to worry about your filters

I have their older lens, I'm curious how the image quality of this new lens compares to the older non VR lens?

Wasn't me :)
