Weather seals in Nikon D700 go bad over time?

5 years 3 months ago #622288 by Jackman
With colder wet season here, and time to kill as I sit in front of a warm fireplace thinking about places I'll be traveling too with my camera.  I was wondering do weather seals go bad in our cameras?  After all, most other seals I know of, start to shrink, crack or just need replacing after time.

Are the ones in our cameras different or the same?  If the same, how often do they need to be replaced?

Thanks in advanced.

My guess is other parts of the camera will be "obsoleted" before the seals go, unless they'be being constantly introduced to deteriorating elements. I've never seen this issue.
Why the worry?

Why so serious?

As long as the seals are not removed, they should stay good for a long time. Many other contributing factors can apply, like heat, cold, humidity, salt (sea/ocean), can shorten their life. That being said, I wouldn't xpect seals to go bad in a camera that has been taken care of possibly for the life of the camera. If you expose your camera to the above regularly, it could be as short as 5 years or as long as 10+. If they are ever removed, they need to be inspected and possibly even replaced, depending on age. Old gaskets tend to not work great when they are put back in. They lose their seal because their sealing properties have deteriorated and they also tend to stick to the surfaces and become damaged when removed and stretched, like an old rubberband.

That would be pricey and not needed IMO.

I was thinking the same thing.  Assuming you kept chemicals off the seals too.

I wondered the same last year and my research came up empty handed.  Pretty much what you have heard now, is that other parts of the camera would likely crap out first.  I couldn't find any cases at the time of camera owners and their seals going bad.

So, something I wouldn't worry over.
