Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 alternative with better sharpness?

5 years 2 months ago #629997 by Pete Franko
I have the 14-24mm already, however want a lens that is not as wide so it will do better photographing people, and swings up towards 35mm.  The 17-35mm would be great, however its DXO score isn't all that:

Unless I come across a Nikon alternative, I'll be willing to consider non-Nikon alternatives like Sigma.  Ideally I want to stick with f/2.8 or better.

Can you help me please?

I think one should consider DXOMark scores suspect.

I had the 17-35 for a while, and enjoyed it very much. With proper post, it's capable of doing a fine job. I have had two IPotDs selected that were taken with that lens: my profile cover image, and this one:

You could also consider the Nikon 16-35 f/4, a very fine lens as well (a friend has one, and I've borrowed it). Or the Tamron 15-30.

Thank you for the comments.  That photo you took looks great.  Another thing I just noticed are reviews on B&H for this lens.  Much better than some of the other places I looked.  That Tamron you mentioned looks pretty reasonable as well.  I had seen the 16-35mm but wasn't interested in it because of max aperture is f/4.

Have you tried taking photos or shooting video of people with that 17-35mm when you had it?

Actually I just noticed you referenced the lens in past tense.  Why did you get rid of it?

A student of mine has that lens and, after AT Fine Tuning, this
pro-lens is working in a spectacular way at all focal length and
predictably at all aperture.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

No video, no people, just things. Such as these:

Yes, "had". I was using the superwide at either 17-25, or at 35. I now own a 35 f/2D, and I can borrow a 20mm f/2.8 from a buddy if I need wider than 28mm.

As fun as a superwide is, I found I wasn't using it. I wanted an 85 f/1.4, and to work towards a 135 f/2, so I sold it and an 85 f/1.8 for funds. I have the Laowa 15mm f/4 macro on my list, will likely get either the 14-24 or the 16-35 someday. I don't think f/4 is a problem, in that at  short focal lengths it becomes more difficult to blow out the  background.

If you like that lens you should be able to get one used at less than $600 on eBay. It's not (IMO) a $2000 lens. Or go for the Tamron.

Interesting, first I'm hearing about that  Laowa 15mm f/4.   Have you shot with it before?

No, I just like the sample images and think it would be way fun. And the price is right for that kind of toy.
