Used Nikon D610 using DX lenses

5 years 3 days ago #640359 by Alfonso Camil
As many of you know, I'm kind of new too photography.  Actually I don't know how long I can use that title, but it hasn't been that long.  I have a friend who just bought a new Nikon Z7 and is selling his Nikon D610, and has offered it to me for only $475.

I have compared it to sites like:  https://www.mpb.com/en-us/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-digital-slr-cameras/used-nikon-digital-slr-cameras/nikon-d610/sku-810340/  that are selling for a bit more.

He's selling just the body of it.  Now my current camera is a Nikon D7200 and all my lenses are for this camera.  These are DX.  Just to confirm I can't use these on this camera body right?  OR can I?

I'm pretty sure I can't.  So I am shopping around for a lens that is FX.

Let me know please.

Thank you,

Alfonso

They can be used but with a resultant loss of resolution. The D610 has the ability to switch between DX & FX modes. That said, if shooting in FX mode with DX lenses, there will be some vignetting. It is more pronounced with wider angle lenses. You should have been buying FX lenses for your DX-format camera as they are better suited to be used with the smaller sensor. The DX camera sensor would only use the central portion of the FX  image which is typically where FX-format lenses are sharpest.

To prevent vignetting being shown, does the camera crop that off then?

BTW thank you!

The camera will crop to DX format and ignore the rest of the
frame that would otherwise be affected by the vignetting.

If you put the camera into DX mode, it will shoot as if it's a DX camera. And you will get 10MP images out of it.

You can use almost any F mount lens on any F mount body. There are not physical restrictions, aside from the very oldest lenses. But any AF lens is safe, DX or FX.

It's quite simple: a DX lens will render a smaller image. You can capture a full frame and crop, or not, and it doesn't matter. It's up to you to decide what you are willing to accept. But in DX mode you'll be getting a lot less data. Which may not really matter at this point in your journey.

Since that camera lists for $1500, I'd say get it... except that that price appears to be a tiny bit high. You might want to check around to know that actual market value first. Price depends somewhat on shutter count and physical condition, but $475 is no bargain.

Agreed.  Sell them off and get some FX glass. You don't have to spend a ton to get great quality.

:agree:   PM me if you want to sell anything  :)

My wife is getting a D7500 in a few weeks.  She'll be needing some glass.
