Nikon 24-120mm vs Nikon 28-300mm best travel lens?

Putting aside the over double focal length advantage of the 28-300mm has.  If you were looking for 1 travel lens to bring with you.  From an optical standpoint, which of these two lenses would you go with?

Nikon should come out with a 28-300mm f/2.8 and be done with it.

They could but could you afford the Sherpa to help carry it?

Not to mention the cost of the lens itself...

The 24-120 f/4 is the walk-around lens you want. Also handles close work well. Excellent IQ and AF speed.

I agree with the others on the shorter zoom.  A 10X zoom is definitely a compromise optically.

f/2.8 28-300mm would be a huge lens, plus they would charge  grip for it.  Especially if the lens was sharp all the way around, that could very well be a one lens and be done with it.

My Camera Bag:

Canon 7D | 50mm f/1.2 | 17-40mm f/4 | 70-200mm f/2.8 | 320EX | 580EXII

I'm a fan of the 28-300mm, it's lightweight and surprisingly offers a decent picture quality through out. For the price, it can't be beat IMO.

I must be the weird one. I liked this lens.  I had the 28-300mm for about 1.5 years and used it for traveling or those days when I just wanted one lens with me.  Did I use it a lot?  I wouldn't go that far.  But for the money, it was a good investment.  I found once over ~260mm or so, things got a little wonky.  And surprisingly, the autofocus was pretty decent with this lens too.
