What can I get for $1250?

Hello.

I bought my Nikon D750 8 months ago with just a 24-70mm lens.  I'm a beginner, so let's get that out of the way.  In reality I did almost nothing with this camera for 5 months.  I have the time now and serious about wanting to learn photography.  I have $1250 to spend on a new lens.  There are so many options and honestly they all all look the same to me.  Not actually, but you get the point.  So far I have been practicing at shooting landscapes, people in the streets.  Although that is uncomfortable for me.  I really do like shooting nature and landscapes though.

What was your first 2 lenses you owned?

Your 24~70 is the best first choice.

Your second choice could be either the 14~24 or 70~200 both
used for that money.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I only have budget for one or the other at this time.  Would you go with the 14-24mm or 70-200mm?

Also I have 24-70mm first generation from what I'm gathering, it's 77mm filter size.  I'm seeing there is a newer one that is VR and has 82mm filter size.  Is there much difference between these besides the filter size and VR?

The new version of the 70-200 has demonstrably superior IQ. And a price tag to match. Get the VR II and you should be just fine. It is also 77mm, and the zoom ring is in an appropriate location (unlike the new one).

Thank you.  Now if were to get the 82mm 24-70mm lens, is there a way to use my 77mm filters on this lens or would I need to get a whole new site of 82mm filters?

Thanks again!

You'll need new filters, yes.
