Nikon 300mm f/4 VR on D800?

What's the story with this lens?  At $1998, it's considerably lower priced than the f/2.8 version of the 300mm big brother.  Is it sharp or worth getting?

Kind of after some user experience.  Let me know please.

If you are talking about the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR,
that is NOT a cheaper little brother but a whole newer design. a
new technology and the results are top level.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Primes are less expensive to design and build, compared to zooms.

Slower glass is less expensive to design and build, compared to faster. f/2.8 lenses are spendy. f/4, not so much.

I'm not real clear on what you're asking, but the newer E lenses are the result of some changes in design, and are superior to the G & D lenses.

If you're asking about using it on a D800, sure, why not? You can always rent one to try it out.

Kind of like the 70-200mm f/4 vs their f/2.8 version right?

Not really. The ƒ4 version, in this case, may be called the "little brother".
The same design but adapted for a smaller maximum aperture. The lens
closes down to ƒ32 so to keep the same number of ƒ stops.

The newer 300 ƒ4 has a new fresnel element (PF) and is waaaay lighter
among other things.

My friend has one, this lens is super light weight.  A lot smaller than I would have expected.  He using it  for photographing birds.

It's a decent lens for the $$.  It's lightweight and if you don't need the f/2.8 wide aperture, it's a strong buy.
