Do you need a 24mm prime lens if you have a 24-70mm?

If you have 24-70mm lens already, is there any need for a 24mm prime?

A 24 f/1.4 for example would be a lot faster, no? My 24-70 f/2.8 is a great lens but still at 24mm it cant compare with a prime.
I have a 16-35 f/4 and use a 20 f/1.8 all the time, especially for night sky photography......YMMV.

After thought, I have the Nikon 24mm f/1.4 on a couple want lists.......

The trinity lenses are great overall performers but the CoG
(centre of gravity) displacement is waaaay to much for any
tripod work in my book. There the 24 ƒ1.4, being shorter is
much better,

I illustrate here — with the shorter and lighter 105 macro —
the consequence of the weight transfer.

Looks like the f/1.4G can be had for around $750. That surprises me. I'd be tempted to look at the Sigma ART, as well, which seems to have positive reviews.

Another solution is a balancing rail. I developed one
that fits my needs for total stability… I will post later.

This is it. Here without its Arca long mounting plate that permits
perfect balance on the tripod and no shake operation.

I'm more than tempted, Sigma is striping it these days. I also have their 14mm f/1.8 art lens on those same want lists!
However the new Nikon 24 f/1.8g is nearer 1800.00 bucks, I'd think twice about a deal too good to be true....

I've no balance issues with that 105 f/2.8, or my 16-35 f/4...The 24-70 though is a bit much at times and takes some thought.

When working, any front heavy combo will shake at SR,
this contraption neutralises that situation.

A lens need not be heavy, technique is as important as an accessory. Its a cool tool though.

Nikon 24mm is considered one of the sharpest lenses on the market.

Not all Nikkor 24 mm are created equal is my first
reaction but AF fine tune is a must for all lenses!

Interesting that the f/1.8 has a higher dxomark than the f/1.4.
