Nikon Z mount lenses work on F Mount DSLR?

I  know the Z mount is much larger than  the F mount.  If  you wanted to start  investing in newer glass and knew at  one point you would be moving to the Z mount camera, can the Z  mount glass  work with some sort of adapter on  F mount  DSLR?

Probably not, there are/will be adapters though that will mount "F" lenses on a "Z" body. With a mirrorless, the rear lens element sits closer to the sensor than with a DSLR.....
I could be wrong.

Why so serious?

That would require a reducing adapter ring that
has the contacts for all intended functions.

I don't know that such ring is on the market yet.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

The geometry of the image means an adapter is going to have to introduce elements to account for the increased distance between the flange and the sensor.

If that's even possible.

And when you do that, you reduce your lens to an F mount lens. You can't get more than f/1.4 on an F mount, period, and a Z lens won't change that. Therefore, there is zero value in a Z-to-F adapter, should such a thing exist.

I'll go with "no".

Well if  this was possible, the value to me is that I can build up my lens collection, respect  my budget, then when ready make the leap. But  I understand, it's not something available.

Thank you for 411 everyone!

Only by purchasing your F mount lenses wisely. Almost every report I've seen on the Z adapter has been overwhelmingly positive, so save your plans for the f/1.2 lenses for when you jump to a Z body. And enjoy what you have now.

No. It's not possible even if someone made an adapter. The registration distance is too short. The lens would have to be able to go into the mirror box for the registration distance to work and that's not physically possible. The rear element can't get close enough to the sensor to focus especially with a flapping mirror in the way. Lenses made for mirrorless systems will not work on a system with a mirror, no matter the brand.
