Investing in a new camera

Hey everyone

I’ve been thinking of upgrading my camera for a while, and seeing as we’re closing in on black friday, I figured now is good time to invest.

I’m looking for some advice on what to upgrade to. I’ve decided on a Nikon because I like the feel, and it’s the brand I’ve had most experience with. My current camera is a D5300, but I’ve been to film school and have had plenty of experience with other models and brands. Now it’s time to upgrade from beginner, to enthusiast.

I mostly take landscape photos, but also occasionally portrait - not so much wildlife or sports/action though. So far, I’ve had most experience with ASP C, but would really like to make the switch to Full Frame. Filming is not an issue - I don’t care whether the camera has 4k or not.

I’ve had my eye on the D750 for a while, but my concern is that it might be a bit outdated, since it was released in 2014. What are your genereal recommendations for an upgrade? And is the D750 worth buying now, in almost 2020?

As far as budget goes, it’s around 2200$.

The D750 is a terrific choice. On the "dated" issue, I'm still shooting a now seven year old D800 and it still has plenty of pop. Frame rate a bit slow, ISO performance a couple stops less than top units now but all I need. I wouldn't hesitate to grab a D750, and for your budget its a fine fit.

Why so serious?

If you are really going for it, see if you can get hold of a
used D810… great tool!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You may have experience with film bodies by various manufacturers, but that doesn't mean your experience with a digital body will be the same. You have to hold and work with a camera in order to decide if it's for you.

You already have a history with Nikon. Unless there's a problem that hasn't been addressed, you might stick with that brand.

Story: I loaned my D750 to a friend in an emergency. She got through her shoot, then went home and ordered one. This was just a few weeks ago. And they're on sale for a bargain.

If it were not for a few key features that were provided by the D850, I'd still be happy with my D750. It's a great camera.

Story: a D810 is a lot of camera, and will happily expose any technical shortcomings. Based on a 10-day rental of a D810, I chose (when upgrading from a D5100) the D750. No regrets, ever.

Story: on another date, I spoke with a wedding shooter that had a D810 and D750, and was told they preferred using the D750.

YMMV. I'm not telling you what to do, only providing anecdotal information, and expressing the (second) opinion that the D750 is hardly "old". While rumors abound about an update coming out soon, unless you can pinpoint something that you require that is not available on that body, I imagine you'll have many happy years with that camera.

And the price is currently quite attractive.

Thank you all for your very helpful advice. The D750 does indeed have a very lucrative price right now, so unless something else goes on sale on friday, it will be the D750 that’s going to end up in my hands.

As far as lenses go, do any of you have recommendations? It is either bundled with a 24-85mm or a 24-120mm. I have a trip to Japan planned in march, and will be using it extensively for the whole trip.

Best regards,
Fred

The 24-120 would be my choice...and gets fair reviews.

The 24-120 is adequate, and will be a fine starting point. A constant aperture lens is always helpful IMNSHO. It's AF performance is not the fastest, but as a travel lens will likely win on versatility for you.

Enjoy.
