Nikon flash technology age

4 years 4 months ago #669188 by Dave Burburry
One other item I'm shopping for my wife for Christmas is a flash.  So I was looking at Nikon flashes and many are discontinued, and then I found the SB700.  Upon doing a little research I found this flash first came out in 2010??

Are flashes just not something that need to be updated?

Which flash are you using?  She's getting a Nikon D7500 for Christmas.

No, flashes don't need to be updated.

The new ones have more power, more features, can be slaved in different ways using new technology, etc.

I use the top-end Yongnuo (968) now. Does TTL. Meets my needs. Probably not as strong as some, but it rarely gets used. And it cost under $125.

I'm still using a SB-900 and (gasp) a SB-600!
They both work perfectly with my aging gear.....

Why so serious?

Edit...I also still have, and it works fine  SB-28, which is probably older than my "thirty something" sons.....

I have two SB 600’s plus an SB 28, an SB 25 an SB22 and a number of older Sunpack and Vivitars. That’s not including my ring lights.

No flash is needed to update and your wife's decision is best of Nikon D7500. It will be better. Go for it.

That is the one I have, and it seems to work a treat. Can also be optically triggered, meaning you could use your on-camera flash (for front fill) and the speedlite for some other purpose.

Some years back, I built a location kit based on three
SB900s and it is still rocking reliably.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Scott reminded me of a few older, film days speedlights I still have, a couple forty years old, give or take. All work still, in fact I've never had a Nikon flash fail.....
