Teleconverter on 70-200mm 2.8 on crop camera

4 years 3 months ago #672228 by Mark T
Hey, I wanted too see if you can put a teleconverter on a Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 lens, ON a DX format camera?  What would be the effective focal length then?  If they teleconverter is 2x, so would it be top end at 600mm?

200x1.5x2 = 600  is my math and assumptions right?

Mark, the TC doubles the lens
and the crop comes after, so

200 x 2 x 1,5 = 600 is the right math
thus proving the assumption is good. :P

I don't believe that lens is compatible with a 2.0 TC.....and no, a 400 is 400 on a crop or full frame camera. The field of view changes, NOT the focal length.

I was wrong about compatibility,  https://cdn-5.nikon-cdn.com/Assets/Common-Assets/Images/Teleconverter-Compatibility/EN_Comp_chart.html

But all you'll get is 400mm, and you won't like the results.

+1 on the above: a crop camera affects the view angle.

Nothing can physically change the focal length. It is what it is. People really need to stop being concerned with the "crop factor" crapola. That was only started so that 35mm films shooters could have a point of reference. As if most of them even understood that, and those that never held an F1 or AE-1 don't really have a point of reference.

TCs drop image quality. That's why they keep coming out with new versions, to try to get better. The Nikon 1.4 II will get you about 85% IQ, which you can recover from with some clever post. The 1.7 has never been highly regarded, and the 2.0, while better, is still going to cost you. Google it and read. There's lots of information out there.

That said, Nikon's page (linked above) lists lens / TC compatibility. The 70-200 works with them, yes, but you'll give up some quality.

If you really want a modestly priced long lens, get the 200-500 ($1100 used). I think you'd be much happier with that than a TC.

The TC will increase the focal length and your crop
will only take the smaller central part of the whole
projection, to a similar angle of view of the 600mm
but, in this, one will not benefit from the same com-
session factor among other things.

I NEVER use TCs but rather invested in pixel count
because of the loss in quality

That's good advice, my son got one and I'm quite impressed.....

I know, right? With a little bit of post it kinda kicks butt. While it's not an f/4, at least it's constant, and good value. IMNSHO.

Yup, I used his up in Maine last june, on my old D800. Not f/4 indeed, I shoot that tank all day at ISO 800 to 3200 and set that aperture where I want. I think his D750 is a little cleaner. A couple sliders in acr, a noise bath in Noiseware and all is good.
Great lens.
