Tokina Macro 100 + Nikon D750; I'm feeling dumb

Hello fine PT folks!  Can I pick your brains for a second, and have you set this newbie straight?

I have tried my best to find the answer to this and am coming up empty, or I'm not understanding what I'm reading.  Either way, here's my question...

When in Aperture Priority, or in Manual, with the Tokina on the body, with the stop ring locked to F/32, I cannot get my subcommand dial to adjust the aperture.  It stays locked to F/32.  Now, no problems if I unlock the ring and spin it manually myself, but still, "it would be nice" if the subcommand dial did the trick.

Interestingly, when in Shutter Priority, Program or Auto, the camera is clearly controlling the fstop just fine.  I can see it changing within the viewfinder and on the display, and the pictures reflect the change (best as I can tell).  But no go in A or M.  So this is making me think I'm either misunderstanding something, or have a setting wrong, or something else.  Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Am older Tokina might not be communicating with the D750. I had on once and don't recall. I wouldn't worry, spin the aperture ring...in the past some of us older folk did everything in manual mode!

Thanks!  Not too worried, just would like it to work if possible.  FWIW I purchased the lens new from Amazon about a month ago, so I doubt/wouldn't think its an old'n (and I have the latest available firmware on the D750).  Thanks again.

When you set it at f32, are you locking the little pin in? (Mine had one)....
