In terms of sharpness is there a difference between the d and g 50mm?

Probably. You'll likely find a difference in edge-to-edge sharpness.

There's almost certainly a difference in AF performance.

There's probably a difference in CA, too. You should consider options and investigate them all. Fast Nikon primes have horrible CA, worse at f/1.4.

Neither of those are expensive lenses, especially used. The D sells for less than $100 on eBay; the G for $130-ish. If you have no budget, get the D.

I have both and use my "less expensive" 1.8D more often, or less seldom?

Why so serious?

The later model G was improved on both the AF capability
and elements construction… I would go for the G.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Less seldom?

Which begs the question, since you have a choice, why the D? What about it is more appealing to you?

I just like the IQ better. Usually use it on the D7100, bought it when I still had my D300. The 1.4G is a bit faster focuser, but the 1.8D is sharper corner to corner. I just never fell in love with the newer fifty.
I'll restate, neither gets much attention from me these days, due to the quality of my current zooms.

Why so serious?
