Nikon D850 Autofocus Issue

4 years 1 month ago #678514 by reznovich
Hi everyone,
Just writing in here in the hopes someone could help with a major autofocus issue I’ve been having over the last couple of days.
Nikon D850 purchased in September 2019, have been fine up until few days ago. It seems not to autofocus properly when used with viewfinder. I normally use back button focus and AF-C 3D but have tried all different autofocus mode both AF-C and AF-S. If I switch to manual focus, camera and lenses work perfectly.
I am attaching some samples to show the issue, the problem I am encountering seems to be limited to when the camera is used in viewfinder mode, if I switch to live mode with same settings and use same autofocus system, the focus is sharp as it should be!
Here I’ve used two different lenses for the examples, taken with a Nikon 105 and a Sigma 15mm. You can easily see that the focus is completely off in shots taken through viewfinder. At first I thought it was a lens problem, but all lenses I own seem to have same issue with autofocus now.
So far I’ve tried:
  • Checking viewfinder diopter (which is fine)
  • Updating camera firmware
  • Calibrating AF fine tune for all lenses
  • Settings reset
  • Camera factory reset

All my attempts have been unsuccessful.
Is there any other step, ideas, recommendations you would have to try solving the issue before sending the camera body back to Nikon for inspection?
Many thanks

Yes to previous post, and the camera is still under warranty, don't hesitate to send it in.

Why so serious?
