Lens confusion for D3300

3 years 10 months ago #685424 by Nicholas-Paul
Looking to buy a 50mm lens for a Nikon D3300. Am getting contrasting information, some sources say that a 50mm lens means it will act as a 75mm lens as it is not a full frame camera, and suggests I buy a 35mm for the D3300 as it will act as a 50mm.

If someone can explain/clear this up that would be sweet.

Thanks in advance :)

What ever is the denomination any given FX prime lens has, it
will keep it… for ever. The fact that your camera has a smaller
sensor will never change any side of the equation in terms of
focal length. What will change, though is the AoV — angle of
view — because your sensor will only record part of what the
lens will project in its direction.

This off the wall, illogical, and ignorant belief has been running
freely for some time and always surfaces all too often.

True, it would be cheaper for your to buy a DX normal lens for
your camera but the solidity and optical performance would be
of some lesser quality but do you really need it. Do you think, in
the future, your needs will still be with the DX format?

Light is free… capturing it is not!

This comes up regularly. To address your question, I suggest reading through these two threads:

If you're going to buy a lens, consider your future: will you go full-frame? If so, then buy a full-frame (FX) lens, rather than the crop frame (DX) version. Not that NIkon sells a DX 50mm lens....

That said, you might consider the (FX) 50mm f/1.8G, on sale at this moment for $200.

Well, if you like the look and perspective of a 50mm on full frame then yes you should buy the 35mm to get the same approximate look. The portion of the image captured is cropped out of the projection from the rear of the lens so yes a 50mm full frame lens on a crop sensor body will look as if it were taken with a 75mm lens on a full frame camera. If you want a more normal look with your lens and not a slightly telephoto look, then get the 35mm. Generally people don't know what they want so they end up making whatever they have work they by moving their position from the subject forward or back.
