Autofocus on D3500

Hi folks,

I'm new here, and to the photography world, and the philosopher in me has me trying to understand every detail of my new camera--a journey that right now has me stuck on the two different focus systems, pertaining to the focus rings, and how they work to focus in both modes.

For example, in liveview (LV) I can change my focus area, and seemingly my focus rings then serve the role of focusing in and out on that one area (say in the corner), but if I am in viewfinder (VF) mode, it doesn't seem I'm still, when using the rings, focusing on that corner area that was set in the LV mode.

So, I'm wondering (1) whether there is a relation between these systems at all, (2) whether the rings serve two different purposes, and (3) what, generally, the rings do.

I'm also wondering, (4) why rotating the focus rings affects the lowest f-stop number.

I'll have many more questions, I'm sure, but I'd greatly appreciate the help on these for now!

I don't use Live view so I can't comment on that but as far as the aperture value changing, I'd say you are using a variable aperture zoom lens and the aperture changes as you zoom in or out. As the lens focal length increases, the aperture gets smaller (larger numbers)... The only way it can remain constant is with a fixed aperture lens. As for your focus question, focusing thru the viewfinder can't be minimized to one area...
