What lens to get for D800?

3 years 4 months ago #702659 by Blue2020
Hi, I'm thinking of purchasing a secondhand Nikon D800 & would really appreciate some advice on what lens/lenses to get for it.I will be using it mostly to take portrait (full figure) photos of people  - these will be reference photos to paint from so I require absolutely no distortion. I will mostly be shooting indoors.Secondly I also need to photograph some active shots (of dancers/performers) - again these are for reference photos to paint from so I really need no distortion. Capturing high res detail is really important.Does anyone have a suggestion about what lens I will need - or I'm guessing I will need 2 lenses for such different subject matter??One other thing... the D800 that I'm considering buying has a high shutter count of 174,000 - so it's quite a low price of $700 AUD. So you think it has a bit of life left in it or is that a bad buy? Thanks in advance!

The higher pixel count and the consequent DR should be treated
with no less than pro lenses… what ever used or new, IF & ED are
a must.

Hey Blue,

You might even pick-up a D810 for not much more than that these days.

Suggest  you get a prime ,  not zoom ,  lens  if " high res detail is really important " ,  something in the vicinity of 50 to 85 mm range for portraits .  This  will possibly also  be suitable for dancers / performers  if they are not far away (how far away do you expect them to be ?).

Thank you - I'll look into the D8d10 too. The performers are usually around 6/7metres away

Yes, the D810 would be a better choice as it does not have an
AAF — anti alias filter and other cool improvements.

I, personally, make successful use of pro grade zooms with
greatest satisfaction… the condition being the AF Fine Tune.

There are many lenses capable of doing wonderful portraits.
As per the demands of the D800's sensor, be sure to get a
lens that is really sharp. I will also suggest going with the D8d10 lens.

Pro lenses are built with almost no tolerance so they may be
all considered as pretty sharp. The same goes with the sensor
on the motherboard. The sharpness hiccup in the equation co-
mes from the third element: the AF system.

I agreed with @Nikon Shooter
Yes, you are 100 percent right about the pro lens.
