Question about AF NIKKOR 80-200 mm

3 years 3 months ago #707702 by luxbrumalis
Hello, Photographytalkers:)
Would you give me some suggestions?

I am Andi, a really newbie in photography and this is my very first post here.
Got Nikon D5200 and just bought AF NIKKOR 80-200 mm 1:4.5-5.6 D.
I knew neither the camera nor the lens have a built-in AF motor but I read that the manual will be working. That’s why I bought it.

Tried to find a “non-CPU lens data” in settings menu but didn’t find one.
Pictures all are blurred.
Should I just ignore this objective and buy one with AF-built-in?

Regards,
Andi

You should be able to focus manually. Plus with a “D” lens metering should be available as well. As for blurred images, that can be caused by a number of issues. Pictures with exif data will give us a better idea. Likely camera movement but that’s not a given. That lens needs a lot of light and at the long end is subject to camera movement .

I would like to help you, Andi, but your playing with gear I never came close to!

Same here, I’ve never had any Nikon camera that needed an AF motor in the lens. All of my camera bodies have a focus motor built in. I gave  away my old Nikon D70s years ago and that even had a built in focus motor. I did moderate a group over on Flickr years ago dealing with using non metering lenses on base model DSLRs but have long since stopped posting there.  That said, you should be able to manually focus that lens on that body.

Thank you so much Screamin Scott and Nikon Shooter:)
The lense is working and extremely like it.

Please forgive my knowledge but is it correct that the AF-D will work good with a camera that has a built-in motor? One don't need to focus manually?

I saw someone sells a D300s (shop guarantee until March 2021), 10251 shutter counts, with a battery gripe, box, charger, and 18-55 mm lens (shop guarantee April 2021). The price is 350 USD. What you guys think about this?

Many thanks

All functions will work on a D300. I still have my D300 plus a D7100 and a D610. I bought my D300 used. It is kinda old tech now though. I’d look for a newer refurbished body before getting that one.

Again, I didn't come close to any of these yet.

The price seems reasonable for D300s as it also has 2 more months
warranty. But I will suggest going for a modern one because the D300s
does the job for a few people but honestly you can get used to newer
models for a bit higher price.
