camera shaking due to bike riding

I'll often take my camera with me when I go for a bike ride. I place the camera in a camera bag. Now I don't do any tricks, but I do come across some rocky trails. Can the bumpy ride damage the camera?

I wouldn't see a problem with biking with your camera in a camera backpack. They tend to have cushioning for the camera and lenses.

Define camera... I have a waterproof camera I would take anywhere. Sturdy and waterproof it is ready for whatever I can dish up. The DSLR on the other hand might be a bit more sensitive to vibrations, dampness and the occasional dump off the bike. I'm more inclined to leave that device in the car. Camera bag padding and zippered shut might make it ok but in my mind there is still a risk.

You might consider locking the mirror up??? Anyone have a comment on that idea?

Are you carrying in a backpack/slingbag, or is the camera bag in a carrier on your bike?

If backpack/slingbag, then you are fine. If the camera bag is in a carrier, as long as the bag is not bouncing and banging around, and your camera is snug in the bag, you shouldnt have any problems.

Overall you should be fine. Shouldn't be any different, if you had the camera, in the bag, in the car, driving over rough roads.

I think the sling-bag option is probably a safe bet, especially since a bike mishap can happen, especially when we're looking up in the trees for birds, etc!

I take my sturdy little Canon G9 when I'm biking... it's built like a little brick, and I have dropped it on a dirt path once... no problem. The lens retracts inside the body when not in use, and it has enough range for most photos, macro too... not great on the telephoto end though, and I've often seen birds around the bike trails where I've wished I had greater reach. My DSLRS are Nikons and I haven't tried to bike w one yet...but you never know until you try. Be safe!

Well I have pretty much dropped all of my Nikons and they have kept going. Actually my equipment gets beat to hell, it is just the nature of my lifestyle.

I have ridden for weeks straight touring s with any of themwith a camera in a handlebar bag. D100, D2H, D3 with no problems with any of them.
The camera gats handled rougher then that on it's way to your camera store, so no worries.
also, I have seen how many newspaper and magazine sports photographers handle their cameras and there is no way that a bike ride can be rougher. Even offroad.
