Using Om-D EM5 lenses on another Olympus body...? will it work with DSLR?

7 years 6 months ago #499821 by Courtney-Marshall
Hi allI got the retro looking OM-D EM5 as an easier to use camera for point and shoot rather than getting a DSLR. I was never overly impressed with the image quality of this camera and should have gotten a DSLR. Coincidentally the view LCD screen has a crack so I can't use it or edit settings anymore. I was quoted $500 to get it looked at and maybe more to fix, so am thinking of buying a new camera body and keeping the lenses... but I want to get a better camera. Would this be possible to still use the lenses that came with the EM5? If so, what camera bodies are my options to give a better quality image?Or is it just the lenses that really affect the image quality? If that's the case, are these lenses able to be put on a DSLR?  Any help and advice would be appreciated! thanks!

The Olympus lenses have a smaller "registration" distance than for any DSLR. So they cannot be used with a DSLR. They can be used with any other Olympus or Panasonic M4/3 body. And there are a bunch of those to choose from.

If you weren't happy with the image quality of the E-M5 you won't be happy with any m-43 camera. The image quality is almost identical across the m-43 line up. I also don't think you will be happy with the results of a DSLR either. The reason I say this is because the image quality of these cameras is very, very good. I had the lowly E-M10 for two years and currently own the E-M1. I know the image quality is very good. If you aren't getting good results, you may need to assess your skills to determine if it's you or your camera at fault. I will post some image examples.

Randy pretty much nailed it. The major difference between the files from an M43rds camera to a DSLR will be that the DSLR file will be able to be enlarged more before IQ falls off. Other than that, he hit the nail on the head. It's more likely Operator technique than camera features.

Hey Randy, Which Falls is that. I know it's not Amicolola, at least it doesn't appear to be....
