Questions on Olympus OM-D E-M5 16MP with 16-80 lens

Hi!

I demo'd the E-M5 first with the 12-50 lens. I was impressed with the detail and sharpness.
But then I returned to demo with the 16-80 f2.8 - 60 lens (which I'd likely purchase from good reviews).

Images appeared to not be sharp and not handling contrast well (IMO).

I noticed after reviewing image properties, that the camera had been set  to exposure "Creative Program..." I do not know what that is and wondering if it impacted the quality of the photos.

I am sure if I knew the camera I could have set it so image quality would be better and I would not have these issues. But I would like to maybe understand what caused these issues. I like minimal work on JPEGs out of camera so hoping these issues could be prevented through camera settings.

Thank you for your time!

I don't know the answer to your question but I just picked up a refurbished (by Olympus) OMD E-M5II and I too am befuddled by the complex menu system. I got the book by Darrell Young about mastering the camera but haven't gotten very far into it yet. Maybe pick up a copy of the book yourself " Mastering the Olympus OMD E-M5II" by Darrell Young & James Johnson. I am going to try adapting my older manual focus lenses to it.

Don't know what "Creative Program" is but if shooting jpg, check the settings for shadow and highlights along with contrast settings. Make sure you are not in and Art filter mode. The 12-40 2.8 lens is an outstanding lens. You can set your own parameters up to shoe clipping I the highlights and the shadows. Blown highlights will show up as red and shadows will show up in blue. I have my highlights set at 252 instead of 255 and 3 instead of 0 for the shadows. That way I know I still have some headroom when the red or blue appears. Good luck with your camera.

Thank you, Shadowfixer and Scott!

I have not yet purchased  the camera; I am deciding between the E-M5, the Fuji XT3/30, or the Sony 6500 (all of which I'd likely need a book and lots of documentation!).. Tough battle maybe!

I hadn't considered the 12-40 F2.8 lens or a book so I really appreciate both suggestions as well as the settings suggestion.  That's really thoughtful and probably would save me lots of time figuring things out myself... if indeed I ever figured them out! I am not always the most patient with technical challenges so it means alot to me. Thank you, again!

All the best to both of you!
Annie
