Lens Converters - Good or Bad??

13 years 4 months ago #7813 by Richmorrisphotography
Hi All

I am looking into buying a wide angle lens but this is a very expensive business!! I keep coming accross these Lens Converters, they have lots of great customer reviews but i am concerned they will have a negative effect on the quality of the final image.

Does anyone have expereince using these converters? Are they any good?

Thanks

Rich

You are correct to be concerned about image quality being impacted. Any additional glass surfaces added to the lens that isn't part of the original design will introduce abberations & distortion. Super wide angle, super telephoto & special purpose lenses always command higher prices . There really is no getting around that fact unless you older manual focus lenses. But then you are normally sacrificing convience features such as auto focus & even metering depending on the camera & lens. That said, I use older manual focus lenses on a Nikon DSLR with good results, but I'm willing to put up with those inconviences...

Even if you are trying to save money, I think you would be better off with a "real" wide angle lens. If you have somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 (usually less) you can get a Pentax 16~45mm f4 zoom. At its widest it is equivalent to a 24mm on a 35mm camera. It has autofocus and all the other modern features. Further, it gets excellent reviews. I have it and like it a great deal. In the event you don't like it, you can sell it for about what you paid for it. I doubt you'll be able to do that with the adaptors, which - especially if they are the type that screw onto your filter ring - will degrade your lens's performance. Manual lenses are also an option, although they can also get pricey.
