Living Room Setup Question

12 years 6 months ago #157156 by Mike Davis
I took these 2 images last night in my living room the set up basically consisted of a black backdrop set up about 3 feet behind the model (my Son's Girlfriend who was roped in) with one Courtenay Solaflash 4000 head set at 45 degrees to the left using a silver umbrella and then another Solaflash 4000 set as low as possible to the right and slightly behind the model with just the standard reflector on it to throw some light onto the backdrop.

I set the lights as far away as was prctical in the small space I had and both were set to their lowest power setting. both were triggered using the pop-up flash on my Olympus E-510 set at 1/32 power. My problem is that I wanted to get a fairly shallow D.O.F to throw the backdrop out of focus a bit and also I wanted the second flash to just illuminate the backdrop a little. In the event I just got too much light and as I was using the pop-up flash the fastest shutter speed I could use on the Oly was 100/sec (sync speed) so I had no alternative but to stop the lens down to about f10. and even then I've had to burn the background down a fair bit. any tips on anything else I can do to combat this problem or any other critique of these pics would be most welcome, many thanks, Mike

This is difficult in a small room as you need to bring her further away from the background, you also dont want any light spilling onto the backdrop or you will get that grey washed out look, I use barn doors on my lights to control where I want the light to fall, this may be another good idea for you to try, you can also take your pop up flash down to 1/16th and it will stil set your lights off.

Nice model by the way.

Well the black backdrop looks more of a dark gray. When I think of black, I am thinking dark pitch black. So maybe the lighting needs to not light up the background so much.
