Hard for me to judge the style and creativity when I am distracted by the technical flaws. Direct on camera flash is horrible for indoor subjects. You have to find a way to soften the light. The subject needs to be placed further away from the background as this will help soften the harsh shadow as will diffusing the light. This will also help with a flawed backdrop if you use a shallow DOF. With that said No. 1 pose looks odd, strained and not very natural. No. 2 is a good start but the shoe is too close to the bottom and you cut the chair off which looks odd. No. 3 is better but the technical flaws mentioned earlier ruin the image. No. 4 gets the same comments as 3 except there is too much room at the top and not enough on the bottom. No. 5 the pose is too static. If you want to use the guitar as a prop, use it, don't just stand it beside the subject. Sorry if all this seems a bit harsh, but I do like the fact that you are thinking and trying new things. The technical stuff can be easily corrected and you can expand on your creativity. I suggest looking at magazines, whether photo or glamour magazines and get a better idea of how to pose the subject along with props. Keep your chin up and enjoy the learning process.

Excellent review, Randy.
I would suggest searching the Articles section for lighting and portrait subjects. Even moving away from the background and shining a broad spectrum light on it would help reduce the harsh shadows. That and using your suggestion of a wider aperture to narrow the DoF and "blur" the background would make a big difference.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Keep your head up and try again following above critiques, dont be disheartened, first things first see if you can get that flash off camera, look for some second hand equipment and build up slowly, you will get there, research posing online their are lots of places to find good posing guides, we all have to start somewhere.

Last one looks like a police lineup. Too static.
